Ghanaian singer Sista Afia has disclosed that she has never depended on a man financially while in a relationship, despite what she describes as a common trend among some Ghanaian women.

Speaking in an interview on Kumasi-based Angel FM, the “Jeje” crooner explained that she earns her own income and therefore sees no reason to ask men for money, even if they are financially comfortable.

According to her, she believes in being financially independent and prefers to cater for herself rather than rely on a partner for support.

“I’ve never asked any man for money before. When I’m in a relationship, I don’t request MoMo from my partner because I make my own money and I know I’ll continue to do so. Even if the man is rich, I don’t think that way. If he decides to buy something for me, I’ll appreciate it, but I won’t ask for it,” she stated.

Sista Afia also claimed that some men feel more comfortable with women they can financially control, adding that many become uncomfortable when they meet independent women.

She argued that hardworking women who earn their own income should not be viewed as competitors in relationships.

“Most Ghanaian men prefer taking care of women they can control. The mentality is wrong. If you meet a hardworking woman who respects and loves you, why should you think she is competing with you simply because she makes her own money?” she questioned.

The singer further revealed that unlike some successful women who avoid dating corporate workers, popularly known as “9-5ers,” she is open to dating any kind of man.

However, she admitted that she has not yet found someone who truly understands her beyond her celebrity status and personality as a woman, though she clarified that she is currently not actively searching for a relationship.

Sista Afia added that she is deeply emotional when it comes to love and has dated men who felt she was “too good to be true” because she neither asks for money nor behaves like the typical celebrity figure they expected.
